Divine Summer Wine: Alexandria Nicole Voignier

The best Voignier yet - Alexandria Nicole '08!

Alexandria Nicole’s Voignier is nothing short of a divine summer wine. I tasted this with my sommelier friend at the winery and we were so impressed we each bought a bottle for later. Intense floral aromas, including jasmine, followed by wonderfully crisp, light and balanced fruit-forward flavors and ending with a hint of honeysuckle. Some may find it reminiscent to a Riesling, although not as sweet. If you ever see this bottle, give it a taste. I checked their website and the ’08 is sold out, so looks like we’ll have to wait until the next vintage for another taste (now I wish I bought 2 bottles…or more)!

The Mollydook Mishap: An Investigation

Recently, one million dollars worth of premium wine from Mollydook Vineyards fell from 20 feet in the air to it’s crushing death while being lifted into a container for shipping. This tragic accident didn’t make sense to me, so I turned to a professional Electric Forklift Technician to get a better sense of what could have gone wrong…

Quick Note on the Mollydook Velvet Glove Shiraz: Last year I actually had the opportunity to taste this divine bottle and loved it! This wine was named appropriately because it feels exactly like smooth, crushed velvet in your mouth! Very tasty and one of the few wines that I absolutely believe is worth the high price-point (~$200) because it is a very unique tasting experience.

The Naming of Turnbull Wine Cellars

A group of friends and I visited Turnbull Cellars on a recent stomp through Napa and were so glad that we did! Half of us tasted the basic tasting, while the other half went to the reserve tasting room. I knew that Turnbull had amazing Cabernet Sauvignon and wanted to taste their flagship bottle, which retails for about $40 and is well worth the price. Meanwhile, my other friends, who tasted in the Reserve room, were so impressed with the hospitality and premium wines, that they not only bought (several) bottles, but even joined the wine club! That is some serious dedication, but I really wasn’t surprised, since it’s such a great tasting staff and product.

In the short video, you will meet Jessica, who discusses how the winery got it’s name ‘Turnbull’. This is the type of insider information that I love to hear.

’09 Coppola Diamond Collection Claret

Coppola didn’t just slap a black and gold label on this bottle for the fun of it… this blend is like liquid gold, but without the gold rush price! An excellent, medium-bodied red that is smooth and supple – perfect for pleasing a variety of tastes and crowds. I paired this with a truffle-infused pasta meal (white sauce-based) but it also paired well with chicken marsala.

This wine is actually a Bordeaux-style blend containing Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It is by no means flat and carries lot’s of dimension!

**Exceptional Value for the Price**

This bottle of Coppola Claret is available at Wine.com for $19.99

4 Napa Wine Tasting Deals

One of the distinctive differences between wine tasting in Napa vs. Sonoma is the cost. What you will often find is that your total trip in Napa will cost substantially more than if you were to visit Sonoma – even though the two are right next door to one another. Many tasting rooms in Sonoma are free, while just about every tasting room in Napa charges. For this post, I’ve put together some Napa wine tasting discounts that I found for my most recent trip this past weekend. Continue reading

Professional vs. Unprofessional Tasting

As the season for wine tasting has begun, I thought I’d share some basic do’s and dont’s that I have learned along the way. Watching this video could be the difference between appearing quite professional, or ridiculously unprofessional (a lush).

*Special thanks to Cave B and Boudreaux Cellars for putting up with my continued antics…
